Bowral by Rail

On Wednesday March 6th the Gillers met with Ken Rouvray at Revesby Station for a trip to Bowral. At Campbelltown we changed from the Suburban Electric train to a Diesel Rail Motor. This is far more modern and comfortable than the old Rail Motor that took us to Sutherland when we lived in Engadine 50 years ago.

The views were interesting and varied, from grazing pastures with various breeds of cattle to dense bushland. At one stage I spied a Nankeen Kestrel hovering, looking for a feed. When I pointed it out to Bev she said “what are those smaller birds up high behind it?" They turned out to be Parachutists from Wilton. Near Bargo we passed a large Flying Fox colony, some flapping about and many hanging in the trees. Along part of the way we could see a many “old fashioned” telegraph/telephone lines with the numerous insulators and broken wires (see photo).

On arrival at Bowral Ken guided us to Dirty Janes Antiques, where one can find all sorts of old and unusual goods for sale. The story of how Dirty Jane got her name is interesting (see photo).  After over an hour’s browsing we proceeded to a nearby hotel for a Wednesday Lunch $15 special lunch before making our way back to the station and the journey home.

Thanks to Ken for his effort in scouting out the transport arrangements for the day.
